Students Help Eliminate Noise Disturbance

A team of engineering students, from the University of Windsor, established a consistent noise emission contour of North America’s Windsor-Detroit border in an effort to eliminate transport noise affecting locals at Canada’s largest border crossing.

The project – known as ‘Windsor Environmental Noise Mapping Initiative’ (WENMI) – was carried out, using environmental noise calculation and mapping software from Brüel & Kjær, to establish a reliable noise emission contour and raise public awareness about environmental noise pollution. It is hoped that the results of this study will be a stepping-stone towards improving health and quality of life for local residents near the Windsor-Detroit border crossing.

Equipped with Brüel & Kjær’s Lima™ software, the students were able to calculate a reliable noise contour on a 5 square kilometres stretch of road. Throughout the study, Brüel & Kjær engineers used real-time, web-based tutorials to provide the students with technical support.

“We chose Brüel & Kjær’s Lima software because of its extensive and detailed capabilities. These include 3D modelling, reverse engineering, soundscaping and the ability to superimpose industrial noise sources with transportation noise. On top of that we get excellent technical support from Brüel & Kjær’s specialists,” says Dr. Colin Novak, Assistant Professor at the University of Windsor.
