Wind energy is one of the fastest growing power generation technologies, but turbines structures are large, expensive investments that require rigorous monitoring at every stage - from design and development to manufacturing and operating.

Once a turbine is operational, its operator is responsible for troubleshooting to minimise costly downtime, repairs and optimising energy output, whilst maintaining good relations with the local community to avoid complaints of noise disturbance.

To ensure compliance with local standards and regulations, keep local communities on side and prevent costly energy reductions, Brüel & Kjær created a range of long and short term measuring systems, such as Noise Sentinel, which is ideal for monitoring wind farms.

High noise levels from wind farms can result in limitations on energy output, while overly-relaxed noise thresholds can cause conflicts with the local community. Noise Sentinel accurately records data over a sustained period - in all weather conditions - to build up a comprehensive picture of the sound characteristics. As noise conditions in and around wind farms vary, long-term monitoring can reveal considerable scope for greater energy generation by tailoring the outputs of individual turbines.
